New Finding Aids Available!

We are happy to announce the availability of some recently processed and/or newly-accessible collections from our holdings! Scroll down for descriptions and samples of images from the following collections: Municipal Ledgers and Books Collection, J.W.H. Hill Account Books Collection, and the New England Casualty Company Collection.


Municipal Ledgers and Books Collection

This collection consists of 23 volumes pertaining to various functions of the Cambridge Municipal government. All volumes are hand-written and include notebooks kept by municipal employees detailing land use, sewers and drains, railroads, alcohol licenses, and parks.

Also included are volumes of certificates for Cambridge workers and business owners. The books date from 1855 to 1941 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1855 to 1900. Click here to view the finding aid for this collection.

J.W.H. Hill Account Books Collection

This collection consists of four account books from the J.H.W. Hill Druggist which was located at 28 River Street in Cambridge. The books date from 1872 to 1876 and include lists of sales arranged by date, as well as occasional weekly summaries of total sales.

The books also contain doodles and notes in the inner covers, in one volume including the well-known rhyme for remembering how many days are in a month. Click here to view the finding aid for this collection.

New England Casualty Company Collection

This collection contains documents relating to the New England Casualty Company/New England Equitable Insurance Company. Subjects include the company’s change of name and the sale of bonds to the City of Cambridge and dates from 1911-1916. Click here to view the finding aid for this collection.
